The Cabildo, was historically the center of an intense civil activity of the city. It was alternately Cabildo de Justicia y Regimiento, jail, House of Justice, Hall of Representatives, Legislature, Government House, Police, etc. The Marquis of Sobremonte, the first Intendant Governor, managed to finish the work, under the direction of the military engineer D. Juan Manuel López, author of the characteristic Recova (1785). At one time it had a tower and a clock, but it was erected during the government of Dr. Miguel Juárez Celman (1880 - 1883).

It has two beautiful colonial courtyards, 10 exhibition halls, a concert hall with seating for 80 people, the City Museum, the City Store, the Children's Reading Room, the Municipal Publishing House, and different administrative offices. as the seat of the Ministry of Culture, the Office of Cultural Heritage and tourist information.

Its esplanade, a large open-air space adjoining the square and Calle San Jerónimo, is the scene of numerous cultural artistic manifestations in Cordoba. It is currently one of the busiest cultural centers in the city.
