MK and Amtrac - Live @ Mixmag Lab x Rancho V in Joshua Tree 2016

MK and Amtrac joined us for a Lab on location in Joshua Tree at Rancho V / Skyline Studios as part of the Smirnoff Sound Collective, a new initiative launched by Smirnoff US and Mixmag to shift the diversity dial in electronic music and culture. For three days, artists and mentors from the Smirnoff Sound Collective came together for our West Coast retreat in the serene setting of Joshua Tree. Creativity was flowing between artists as they settled into an equipped studio space and came together for yoga and meditation sessions. In between the productive hours, MK and Amtrac took a break to lead a sunset desert Lab full of dance floor bombs.

Shiba San - Live @ Mixmag Lab SYD 2016

The Lab SYD marks its first birthday this Friday with a very special international performance by Dirty Bird Records lord Shiba San. The inaugural Lab SYD broadcast kicked off with Basenji in December 2015, joining the existing worldwide locations in London, New York and Los Angeles. One year on from its setup, Mixmag’s fourth global spot for The Lab has not only established itself as a platform to showcase the best in Australian dance music (and special international guests), but it has sent a positive message around the world championing our ever-growing dance community and the huge talent pool within. Despite the lock out law restrictions, Sydney is still home to a thriving nightlife scene and has exported some of the electronic world’s biggest breakthrough artists of the past few years. Over the last 12 months The Lab SYD has hosted 22 artists, including Bella Sarris, Busy P & Boston Bun, Late Nite Tuff Guy, DJ Craze, Mo’Funk and K.I.M (The Presets). There’s a lot to celebrate on this anniversary, and Shiba San is ripe to get the party pumping with his tough house beats. Shiba San’s new EP ‘Up & Down’ is out on December 9th on Dirtybird Records. He just got back from an Asia and Europe headline Tour and is about to start his latest tour down under, with a stopover at Fiji's stunning Your Paradise festival.

Kevin Saunderson b2b The Saunderson Brothers - Live @ Smirnoff Sound Collective @ National Sawdust 2016

Up-and-coming talents that represent a spectrum of different backgrounds will be offered invaluable guidance from accomplished mentors curated from all sides of the electronic music industry to help the next generation of artists succeed and navigate their growing careers. “It’s quite remarkable to us that last year only 10% of electronic music headliners were women," Justin Medcraft, SMIRNOFF Global Senior Brand Manager said. "When you look at other communities such as the African American community and the LGBTQ community, you find a similar lack of representation throughout the industry. With the mentorship program, our ambition is to make an impact in diverse representation within electronic music." The year-long program includes two special retreats that bring our artists and mentors together face-to-face to learn and discuss with one another and create new experiences. Artists, both seasoned and new, will share studio time and collaborate on inspiring new tunes that'll later be released by the Smirnoff Sound Collective.

For the very first time, Mixmag Live departed the UK and arrived in the United States. Deservingly, New York City was the first to host Mixmag Live abroad. Brooklyn's premier nightclub Output hosted Mixmag Live's debut in North America, which honored a league of pioneers not only in techno, but also in music technology. RICHIE HAWTIN led the charge at Mixmag Live, presenting his MODEL 1 PLAYdifferently mixer alongside a strong showing of talents including house artist Louie Vega, MODEL 1 ambassador Matador and rising star Julia Govor. The party's was celebration of the December Tech Issue which features Hawtin, Matador, Nicole Moudaber, Hito, Dubfire, Chris Liebing, Loco Dice, Paco Osuna and Fabio Florido. For years, Hawtin has been a maestro of both the underground and also a sharp voice and mind behind the intertwined world of music and technology. He found his start in the iconic Detroit scene in the 90s, prominently with his work as Plastikman, pushing the sound of minimal techno to the forefront and helping to define the genre in its early stages. After establishing his labels and leaving an imprint on the city of Detroit and the genre of techno, Hawtin went on to begin exploring the many realms with which music could be combined. He established ENTER., a specially curated party at Space Ibiza that called upon a wide variety of talents across five rooms in the nightclub. Eventually, his personal love of Japanese culture and specifically, of sake, was also integrated into the event and now remains an ongoing passion project of the Hawtin legacy. Together, the league arrives as ambassadors of MODEL 1 and masters of their craft. It's set to be a special night in Brooklyn for this Mixmag Live celebration of all things music and technology with some of the underground's finest.
